16-year-old form one student of Opoku Ware Senior High School, Stephen Apemah Baah has become the talk of town when it comes to the National Science and Maths Quiz.
Stephen has performed tremendously in this year’s quiz and sent his school to the grand finale happening on the 31st of October.
Speaking to Joy News, Stephen said; “I started preparing for quizzes in JHS 2 but generally I became interested in NSMQ in JHS 3……. I remember in JHS 3, I wanted to go to Prempeh College, and in JHS 3, I wanted to go to Presec then last minute I chose Opoku Ware School. Opoku Ware wasn’t my first choice initially but last I came here”
In most cases, schools select form three students to represent them in the quiz so it came as a shock to NSMQ enthusiasts to know Stephen is a form one student. Coordinator of the Quiz team for Opoku Ware SHS, Richard Mensah explained the circumstances that led to choosing Stephen as a contestant. According to him, they saw the display of competence Stephen exhibited so they allowed him to prove himself.
Stephen admitted he was scared initially but decided to give it his best shot.
His seniors in the team have rained praises on him for his performances so far and hope he leads the school to victory.
In 2021, when Stephen was in JHS 2, he contested for the KNUST College of Sciences Junior Science and Maths Quiz and was eliminated in the semifinal stage. However, he contested again in JHS and won the trophy for his school. He was honored with a Presidential award for scoring nine ones in the 2022 BECE.
Some online well-wishers have poured in congratulatory messages for Stephen ahead of the finale.
