Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. It can affect one’s thoughts, feelings, and daily functioning. Events like the loss of loved ones, marital issues, relationship breakups, stress from work, physical pain, medical problems, domestic violence, body shaming, and economic hardship can all lead to depression.
Depression is as serious as any other illness but most Ghanaians do not perceive it as such. Most people who go through depression are not able to communicate their plight effectively for fear of being misunderstood or mocked by others. Sadly, they do not seek professional help either.
In a society where a mental health disorder such as depression cannot be openly discussed, many people who go through it end up isolating themselves from society even to the extent of ending their lives.
However, there are treatment options available to people suffering from depression, which may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. People who suffer from this mental health disorder should be encouraged to seek professional assistance to help manage their situation.
Families and friends should actively support individuals facing depression, reaching out to them and offering assistance. This support can make a significant difference and prevent situations from worsening.
